Founded by local physicians who believed medicine was stronger through collaboration, the VMA has evolved from a small professional society into a vibrant community that connects, supports, and advocates for doctors across every stage of their careers. For more than a century, the VMA has provided a place where physicians could gather beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics—to exchange ideas, advance medical knowledge, and build lasting professional relationships.

The Association was established with a clear purpose:

• Advance the scientific, educational, and professional welfare of physicians

• Promote the highest standards of healthcare in British Columbia

• Uphold the integrity and honour of the medical profession

• Represent the interests of physicians practising throughout Greater Vancouver

One of the VMA’s earliest contributions to organized medicine was the Vancouver Medical Association Bulletin, first published in 1924. That publication would later become the British Columbia Medical Journal, helping shape medical communication and education across the province for generations of physicians.
